September 2002 to present

Teacher of higher level International Baccalaureate biology (eleventh and twelfth grade).    Additional responsibilities include:

 

  • Leading a staff of 80 teachers in a multi-year professional development study of "brain based" teaching research and strategies

  • Advisor to the Link Crew (a student organization designed to ease the transition into high school for incoming students)

  • Advisor to the school Biology Club, a founding charter in the National Association of Biology Teachers Biology Clubs

  • Teacher representative on the school site council

  • Teacher representative on the district LASER committee (science inquiry implementation)

  • Teacher representative on curriculum scope, sequence and adoption committees (physical science and biology)

  • National Board Certification facilitator for a group of 8 candidates working on writing and filming entries

  • Co-chair of the University of Washington College of Education Professional Educators advisory board

  • Critical Friends Group coach

  • New Teacher Academy facilitator (lead district wide new teacher mentoring program for secondary teachers)

  • Powerful Teaching and Learning facilitator (lead groups of teachers though observations and reflection process using the BERC group STAR protocol).

 Biology Research Experience 

Earthwatch Team Member

Matura, Trinidad

Arranged for a group of 13 current and former students to travel to Trinidad to assist with population studies of nesting leatherback sea turtles. 

 

Earthwatch Team Member

San Salavador, Bahamas

Arranged for a group of 17 current and former students to travel to a remote island in the Bahamas to assist with the longest running coral reef survey in the world.  Quadrant sampled, transect sampled, mapped and analyzed the health of an endangered coral reef.

 

Earthwatch Fellow

Pantanal, Brazil

Awarded a grant by the National Geographic Society for travel to assist with four on-going research projects at the Pantanal Conservation Research Initiative field station in Brazil.  Tagged tracked peccaries, monitored water quality, and performed a bird census.

 

Research Assistant

Tingil Island, Indonesia

Assisted in census taking of long tailed macaque monkeys on an uninhabited island.  Studied the relationship between draught conditions and the diet of monkeys.

University of Washington Primate Center, Seattle, WA

Conducted experiments testing the effectiveness of enrichment tools as a method to increase captive primate foraging behavior.

 

Veterinary Assistant

Contributed to operating all aspects of animal clinic, including client relations, computer record keeping, anesthesiology, radiology and surgery.
